Our History

SETIK was found in 1964 by Rev. Fr. Antoninous. From the beginning it called KIT - Kandy Institute of Technology and the goal of the organization was to provide vocational trainings to the plantation youths.


Our Directors


Rev. Fr. Antoninous - the founder was the first Director of it and he continued his work from 1964 to 1973. In 1970 this organization transferred to Socio Economic Training Institute of Kandy (SETIK) with the aim to uplift the lives of the plantation and rural people.

Rev. Fr. Vianney Fernando (Present Bishop of the Diocese of Kandy) took over the institute from Fr. Antoninus and he was the second Director of SETIK and he continued his duties from 1973 to 1983. In this time period more welfare programmes implemented to uplift the lives of the poorest of the poor.

In 1983 Rev. Fr. Bala Rajendran assumed his duties as the Director of Setik (appointed by the Bishop of Kandy) and continued his work till 1986.

Rev. Fr. Oswald B. Firth appointed as the Director of SETIK in 1986 and he was there till 1990.

Rev. Fr. Rohan Silva took over SETIK from Rev. Fr. Firth in 1990 and he continued the responsibility as the Director till 1992.

Rev. Fr. Nandana Manatunga assumed his duties as the Director since 1993. At this time SETIK became the Commission for Justice Peace Human Development and Human Rights Secretariat (JPHDHR Secretariat). Meantime this organization affiliated to the Asian Human Rights Commission and implemented more activities to stop the violation of Human Rights. Rev. Fr. Nandana Manatunga concluded in year 2003 and Rev. Fr. George Sigamoney took over the responsibility as the Director.

Rev. Fr. George Sigamoney was able to write more projects and gained funds to work more effectively and efficiently for the oppressed of the Central Province. Within this time period more programmes were implemented for the tea plantation people especially to provide them better health, sanitation, water and housing facilities. Also he started to work for the migrants and opened a unit at SETIK to work on migrants, returnees and their family members.

Rev. Fr. Camillus D. Jansz took over the responsibility as the Director of SETIK on 1st April 2009 and he is continuing his good work with Setik…
